Angels in Islam

ANGELS & THEIR PERSONALITIES & DUTIES

Angels are a creation of Allah s.w.t. and their duty is to glorify Allah s.w.t and obey the command of Allah s.w.t. They are naturally obedient to Allah, and their duty is to carry out the commands of Allah. They are genderless and does not eat, drink, sleep, or procreate unlike humans; they do not have a free-will, therefore it is not in their nature to disobey Allah. Angels carry out duties in both the physical world and the unseen world.

  • They do not eat and are extremely huge.
  • They do not have a gender
  • They can take on human form.
  • They have wings, that can be in pairs, threes, or fours.
  • They are formed of light.

As mentioned in the Quran:-

“They do not disobey Allah’s commands that they receive; they do precisely what they are commanded”(Quran Chapter 66: Verse 6).

“And to Allah prostrate whatever (is) in the heavens and whatever (is) in the earth of moving creatures and the Angels, and they (are) not arrogant. They fear their Lord from above them, and they do what they are commanded.” (Quran Chapter 16 Verse 49 & 50)

CREATION OF ANGELS:

Angels are created from light, although it is not mentioned in the Quran, but according to narrations from Hadeeth it has been stated that the Angel are created from Light…

“’Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Angels were created from light, jinns were created from a smokeless flame of fire, and ‘Adam was created from that which you have been told (i.e., sounding clay like the clay of pottery).” [Muslim].”

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah ‘s Apostle said, “Allah has some angels who look for those who celebrate the Praises of Allah on the roads and paths. And when they find some people celebrating the Praises of Allah, they call each other, saying, “Come to the object of your pursuit.’ ” He added, “Then the angels encircle them with their wings up to the sky of the world.” He added. “(after those people celebrated the Praises of Allah, and the angels go back), their Lord, asks them (those angels)—-though He knows better than them—-‘What do My slaves say?’ The angels reply, ‘They say: Subhan Allah, Allahu Akbar, and Alham-du-li l-lah, Allah then says ‘Did they see Me?’ The angels reply, ‘No! By Allah, they didn’t see You.’ Allah says, How it would have been if they saw Me?’ The angels reply, ‘If they saw You, they would worship You more devoutly and celebrate Your Glory more deeply, and declare Your freedom from any resemblance to anything more often.’ Allah says (to the angels), ‘What do they ask Me for?’ The angels reply, ‘They ask You for Paradise.’ Allah says (to the angels), ‘Did they see it?’ The angels say, ‘No! By Allah, O Lord! They did not see it.’ Allah says, How it would have been if they saw it?’ The angels say, ‘If they saw it, they would have greater covetousness for it and would seek It with greater zeal and would have greater desire for it.’ Allah says, ‘From what do they seek refuge?’ The angels reply, ‘They seek refuge from the (Hell) Fire.’ Allah says, ‘Did they see it?’ The angels say, ‘No By Allah, O Lord! They did not see it.’ Allah says, How it would have been if they saw it?’ The angels say, ‘If they saw it they would flee from it with the extreme fleeing and would have extreme fear from it.’ Then Allah says, ‘I make you witnesses that I have forgiven them.”‘ Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) added, “One of the angels would say, ‘There was so-and-so amongst them, and he was not one of them, but he had just come for some need.’ Allah would say, ‘These are those people whose companions will not be reduced to misery.’ “

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When Allah ordains something on the Heaven the angels beat with their wings in obedience to His Statement which sounds like that of a chain dragged over a rock. His Statement: “Until when the fear is banished from their hearts, the Angels say, ‘What was it that your Lord said?’ ‘They reply, ‘(He has said) the Truth. Narrated Abu Huraira:

The angel of death was sent to Moses and when he went to him, Moses slapped him severely, spoiling one of his eyes. The angel went back to his Lord, and said, “You sent me to a slave who does not want to die.” Allah restored his eye and said, “Go back and tell him (i.e. Moses) to place his hand over the back of an ox, for he will be allowed to live for a number of years equal to the number of hairs coming under his hand.” (So the angel came to him and told him the same). Then Moses asked, “O my Lord! What will be then?” He said, “Death will be then.” He said, “(Let it be) now.” He asked Allah that He bring him near the Sacred Land at a distance of a stone’s throw. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, “Were I there I would show you the grave of Moses by the way near the red sand hill.”

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their foot steps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad ? He will say: I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Apostle. Then it will be said to him, ‘Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has given you a place in Paradise instead of it.’ ” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “The dead person will see both his places. But a non-believer or a hypocrite will say to the angels, ‘I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say! It will be said to him, ‘Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by reciting the Qur’an).’ Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatever approaches him except human beings and jinns.”

Narrated Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) The commencement (of the Divine Inspiration) to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was in the form of true dreams in his sleep, for he never had a dream but it turned out to be true and clear as the bright daylight. Then he began to like seclusions, so he used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship Allah continuously for many nights before going back to his family to take the necessary provision (of food) for the stay. He come back to (his wife) Khadija again to take his provision (of food) likewise, till one day he received the Guidance while he was in the cave of Hira. An Angel came to him and asked him to read. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) replied, “I do not know how to read.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “Then the Angel held me (forcibly) and pressed me so hard that I felt distressed. Then he released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he held me again and pressed me for the second time till I felt distressed. He then released me and asked me to read, but again I replied. ‘I do not know how to read.’ Thereupon he held me for the third time and pressed me till I got distressed, and then he released me and said, ‘Read, in the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists), has created man out of a clot, Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen, has taught man that which he knew not.” (96.1-5). Then Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) returned with that experience; and the muscles between his neck and shoulders were trembling till he came upon Khadija (his wife) and said, “Cover me!” They covered him, and when the state of fear was over, he said to Khadija, “O Khadija! What is wrong with me? I was afraid that something bad might happen to me.” Then he told her the story. Khadija said, “Nay! But receive the good tidings! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you, for by Allah, you keep good relations with your Kith and kin, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, entertain your guests generously and assist those who are stricken with calamities.” Khadija then took him to Waraqa bin Naufil, the son of Khadija’s paternal uncle. Waraqa had been converted to Christianity in the Pre-lslamic Period and used to write Arabic and write of the Gospel in Arabic as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said (to Waraqa), “O my cousin! Listen to what your nephew is going to say.” Waraqa said, “O my nephew! What have you seen?” The Prophet (ﷺ) then described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, “This is the same Angel (Gabriel) who was sent to Moses. I wish I were young.” He added some other statement. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) asked, “Will these people drive me out?” Waraqa said, “Yes, for nobody brought the like of what you have brought, but was treated with hostility. If I were to remain alive till your day (when you start preaching). then I would support you strongly.” But a short while later Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was paused (stopped) for a while so that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was very much grieved.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4953

Chapter 1, Book 65: Prophetic Commentary on the Qur’an (Tafseer of the Prophet (pbuh))

ANGELS IN PHYSICAL FORM

Even though they are created from light, they can take various form. In chapter 35 verse 1 the Quran mentioned that Angels have wings.

“All praises (be) to Allah, Originator (of) the heavens and the earth, (Who) makes the Angels messengers having wings two or three or four. He increases in the creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah (is) on every thing All-Powerful.”,

  • Angel visited Maryam (a.s), mother of Isa (a.s) Jesus with glad tidings:
    1. Quran 19:7 Then she took from them a screen. Then We sent to her Our Spirit then he assumed the likeness for her (of) a man well-proportioned.
    2. Quran 19:18 She said, “Indeed, I [I] seek refuge with the Most Gracious from you if you are God fearing.”
    3. Quran 19:19 He said, “Only I am a Messenger (from) your Lord, that I (may) bestow on you a son pure.”

  • Angel visited Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) with revelation of the Holy Quran.
    1. Quran 96: 1-5 Read, (O Prophet), in the Name of your Lord (Allah) Who created—He (Allah) created humans from a clinging clot (i.e., leech like blood clot) Read! And your Lord (Allah) is the Most Generous, Who taught by the pen- (Allah) Taught human being what he (i.e., human being) knew not.
    2. Quran 2:97-98 Whoever is an enemy to Jibril – it is [none but] he who has brought the Qur’an down upon his heart, by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers. Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Jibril and Mika’il – then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.

THE ROLE OF ANGELS
Major Angels and their duties:

Gabriel:

  • Jibreel (Gabriel) is the angel tasked with communicating Allah’s revelation to his messengers.
  • ‘Whoever is Jibril’s adversary, then he (Jibril) allowed this Quran to drop on your heart by Allah’s Command, Confirming the earlier Books, and there is guidance and happy tidings to Muslims,’ say you. Whoever is hostile to Allah, His angels, His Messengers, Jibril, and Mikael, then Allah is hostile to unbelievers. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:97-98)
  • “If you support one another against him (Muhammad), Allah, Himself, will protect him, as will Gabriel and the upright among the believers, as well as the angels.” (Surah al Tahrim, 4)

Mikaaeel (Michael):

  • Mikaaeel is the angel in charge of distributing food (i.e., sustenance) to whomever Allah pleases.
  • This angel is indicting of rain and nutrition.
  • Whoever, be the enemy of Allah and His angels and His Messengers and Jibril and Mikael, then Allah is the enemy of disbelievers. (Surah al Baqara, 98)

Israafeel (Raphael):

  • The angel Israfeel (a.s.) is in charge of blowing the trumpet on the Day of Judgment proclaiming the end of the world.
  • “And on the Day when the Trumpet is sounded, all those in the heavens and on the earth will be disturbed, save he whom Allah wills. And they were all humbled in front of Him.” (Surah al Naml, 87)
  • “And the Trumpet will be blown (the second sounding), and they will spring forth swiftly from their graves to their Lord.” (Surah al Yasin, 51)
  • “On that day they shall follow the inviter (Israafeel), there is no crookedness in him, and the voices shall be low before the Beneficent God so that you shall not hear aught but a soft sound.” (Surah al Ta-ha, 108)
  • Unbelievers will say, “This is a difficult day.”(Surah al Qamar, 8)
  • “How can I feel comfortable when the holder of the trumpet is holding it to his lips, his head bent, and waiting for the command to blow it?” the Messenger of Allah, stated, according to Abu Sa’id al-Khudri. “What should we say, O Messenger of Allah?” the Muslims wondered. “Say: Allah is plenty for us, and the caretaker is excellent,” the Prophet remarked. We place our faith in Allah, our Lord.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3243)

Azrael (Malak Am-Maut):

  • He is the Angel of Death, sent by Allah SWT to take the souls. He is referred to as “Angel of Death” in hadiths and ayahs.
  • “The angel of death in charge of you will lead you to die, and then you will be returned to your Lord.” (Surah al Sajda, 11)
  • “When one of you is about to die, Our angels take his soul, and they never fail to do their job.” (Surah al An’am, 61)
  • “When our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say: “Where are the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah.” (Surah al A’raf, 37)

Harut and Marut

  • Harut and Marut are described as Angels in the Holy Quran.
  • 2:102 And they followed what recite(d) the devils over (the) kingdom (of) Sulaiman. And not disbelieved Sulaiman [and] but the devils disbelieved, they teach the people [the] magic and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. And not they both teach any one unless they [both] say, “Only we (are) a trial, so (do) not disbelieve.” But they learn from those what [they] causes separation with it between the man and his spouse. And not they (could) at all [be those who] harm with it any one except by permission (of) Allah. And they learn what harms them and not profits them. And indeed they knew that whoever buys it, not for him in the Hereafter any share. And surely evil (is) what they sold with it themselves, if they were (to) know.
  • 2:103 And if [that] they (had) believed and feared (Allah), surely (the) reward (of) from Allah (would have been) better, if they were (to) know.

Hamalat al-‘Arsh:

  • They are the Arsh (throne)-bearing angels stated in the following ayah:
  • “Those (angels) who bear Allah’s Throne and those who surround it laud and believe in their Lord, and seek pardon for those who believe (in Allah’s Oneness), saying: “Our Lord! You are merciful and wise, so pardon all who repent and follow Your Way, and deliver them from the wrath of the burning Fire!” (Surah al-Mu’ min, 7)
  • “And the angels will be on its sides, and eight will sustain thy Lord’s Throne above them that day.” (Surah al Haqqah, 17)

Munkar and Nakeer:

  • These two angels would interrogate souls in the grave about their religion and deeds after they have died.
  • Abu Hurairah narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: “When the deceased – or he said when one of you – is buried, two angels, black and blue (eyed_ come to him. One of them is called Al-Munkar, and the other An-Nakir. They say: ‘What did you used to say about this man?’ So he says what he was saying (before death) ‘He is Allah’s slave and His Messenger. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.’ So they say: ‘We knew that you would say this.’ Then his grave is expanded to seventy by seventy cubits, then it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: ‘Sleep.’ So he said: ‘Can I return to my family to inform them?’ They say: ‘Sleep as a newlywed, whom none awakens but the dearest of his family.’ Until Allah resurrects him from his resting place.” “If he was a hypocrite he would say: ‘I heard people saying something, so I said the same; I do not know.’ So they said: ‘We knew you would say that.’ So the earth is told: ‘Constrict him.’ So it constricts around him, squeezing his ribs together. He continues being punished like that until Allah resurrects him from his resting place.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1071 | Chapter 70: What Has Been Related About The Punishment In The Grave, Book 10: The Book on Jana”iz (Funerals)

Kiram al Katibin:

The two angels documenting the actions are known as the “kiram al katibin” angels.

  • “And there are most certainly keepers watching over you. They know what you do, honourable recorders.” (Surah al Infitar; 10-12)
  • 50:17 When receive the two receivers on the right and on the left seated.

Zabāniyat:

  • Zabaniyat are Guards of Hell
  • 96:17. So let him (i.e., one who prevents) call his associates (for help);
  • 96:18. We shall call the Guards of Hell.

Malik:

  • He is the gatekeeper of Hell.
  • And the one who was kindling the fire was Malik, the gatekeeper of the Hell-fire. Sahih al-Bukhari 1386 | Chapter 93: Chapter:, Book 23: Funerals (Al-Janaa’iz)

Naziat Angels

  • These are the angels that extract the souls from the Children of Adam. Those, whose souls are taken by angels with difficulty, as if drowning throughout the process, are among them and those who can easily remove
  • Some people’s souls are easily removed by angels as if they were unwinding him (i.e., removing his soul from him) due to their quickness.
  • “The Angel of Death appears to the believer, sits at his head, and says, ‘O you good soul, come out and accept the pardon and pleasure of your Lord.’ The spirit then comes out freely, like water from a water skin’s mouth.”
  • The soul inside the disbeliever’s body is gripped by extreme terror (and refuses to yield itself up), whereupon the Angel of Death forcefully pulls it out like multi-pronged skewers being wrenched out of wet fleece – ripping the arteries and nerves with them.” (Bukhari)
  • “Allah’s Messenger (saws) approached Abu Salamah (i.e., his body), who had wide-open eyes. When the Ruh (spirit) is taken out of the body, the vision follows it, the Prophet (saws) stated, closing his eyes. (Muslim and Ahmed)

Hafaza (The Guardian Angels):

  • For each (such person) there are (angels) in succession, before and behind him: They guard him by command of Allah. Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it (their state of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah). But when (once) Allah willeth a people’s punishment, there can be no turning it back, nor will they find, besides Him, any to protect. (Ar-Rad 13/11)

Angels who helped in the Battle of Badr

  • Both verses, which come in two different chapters of the Quran, implore the Prophet (peace be upon him) to explain how Allah Most High promised to send His angels to aid the believers at Badr when they were overwhelmed by their oppressors. It isn’t a report based on genuine data. And verily, Allah did help you at Badr, when you were resource less. So be afraid of Allah, so that you may be appreciative. When, oh my! ‘Is it not enough for your Lord to support you by sending down three thousand angels?’ you said to Muslim. (Surah Al-Imran, 123-124)
