إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتْ
Ayah/Verse 1: idhā l-samāu infaṭarat
Meaning: When the sky splits ˹apart˺
[Izas samaaa’un fatarat]
وَإِذَا ٱلْكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتْ
Ayah/Verse 2: wa-idhā l-kawākibu intatharat
Meaning: and when the stars fall scattering
[Wa izal kawaakibun tasarat]
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ
Ayah/Verse 3: wa-idhā l-biḥāru fujjirat
Meaning: and when the seas burst forth (i.e., overflow)
[Wa izal bihaaru fujjirat]
وَإِذَا ٱلْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ
Ayah/Verse 4: wa-idhā l-qubūru buʿ’thirat
Meaning: and when the graves spill out ˹its contents˺
[Wa izal qubooru bu’sirat]
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ
Ayah/Verse 5: ‘Alimat nafsun mā qaddamat wa-akharat
Meaning: ˹then˺ each soul will know what it has sent ahead and left behind (i.e., good and bad deeds)
[‘Alimat nafsum maa qaddamat wa akhkharat]
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلْكَرِيمِ
Ayah/Verse 6: yāayyuhā l-insānu mā gharraka birabbika l-karīmi
Meaning: O the human being! What has deceived you (i.e., made you careless) concerning your Lord ˹Allah˺, the Most Generous
[Yaaa ayyuhal insaaanu maa gharraka bi Rabbikal kareem]
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ
Ayah/Verse 7: alladhī khalaqaka fasawwāka faʿadalaka
Meaning: Who created you, then fashioned you, then proportioned you
[Allazee khalaqaka fasaw waaka fa’adalak]
فِىٓ أَىِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ
Ayah/Verse 8: fī ayyi ṣūratin mā shāa rakkabaka
Meaning: in whatever form what He ˹Allah˺ willed, He ˹Allah˺ put you together
[Feee ayye sooratim maa shaaa’a rakkabak]
كَلَّا بَلْ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ
Ayah/Verse 9: kallā bal tukadhibūna bil-dīni
Meaning: No! But you deny the ˹Final˺ Judgment
[Kalla bal tukazziboona bid deen]
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَـٰفِظِينَ
Ayah/Verse 10: wa-inna ʿalaykum laḥāfiẓīna
Meaning: and indeed, upon you (i.e., the human being) surely are guardians (i.e., appointed angels)
[Wa inna ‘alaikum lahaa fizeen]
كِرَامًا كَـٰتِبِينَ
Ayah/Verse 11: kirāman kātibīna
Meaning: honorable writers (i.e., angels recording)
[Kiraaman kaatibeen]
يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ
Ayah/Verse 12: yaʿlamūna mā tafʿalūna
Meaning: They (i.e., angels recording) know what you (i.e., the human being) do (i.e., all your deeds)
[Ya’lamoona ma taf’aloon]
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
Ayah/Verse 13: inna l-abrāra lafī naʿīmin
Meaning: Indeed, the righteous ˹human being˺ will be surely in Bliss (i.e., delight)
[Innal abraara lafee na’eem]
وَإِنَّ ٱلْفُجَّارَ لَفِى جَحِيمٍ
Ayah/Verse 14: wa-inna l-fujāra lafī jaḥīmin
Meaning: and indeed, the wicked ˹human being˺ will be surely in hellfire
[Wa innal fujjaara lafee jaheem]
يَصْلَوْنَهَا يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ
Ayah/Verse 15: yaṣlawnahā yawma l-dīni
Meaning: they (i.e., the wicked) will burn in it on the Day of Judgment
[Yaslawnahaa Yawmad Deen]
وَمَا هُمْ عَنْهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ
Ayah/Verse 16: wamā hum ʿanhā bighāibīna
Meaning: and they (i.e., the wicked) will not be ˹able to be˺ absent (i.e., escape) from it
[Wa maa hum ‘anhaa bighaaa ‘ibeen]
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ
Ayah/Verse 17: wamā adrāka mā yawmu l-dīni
Meaning: And what will make you realize what the Day of Judgment is
[Wa maaa adraaka maa Yawmud Deen]
ثُمَّ مَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ
Ayah/Verse 18: thumma mā adrāka mā yawmu l-dīni
Meaning: Then, what will make you realize what the Day of Judgment is
[Summa maaa adraaka maa Yawmud Deen]
يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ لِّنَفْسٍ شَيْـًٔا ۖ وَٱلْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلَّهِ
Ayah/Verse 19: yawma lā tamliku nafsun linafsin shayan wal-amru yawma-idhin lillahi
Meaning: ˹It is˺ the Day when a soul will have no power ˹to do˺ anything for ˹another˺ soul, and the ˹Absolute˺ Command on that Day is with Allah
[Yawma laa tamliku nafsul linafsin shai’anw walamru yawma’izil lillaah]
